An Analog of Aether (Anders/Hawke, past Anders/Karl) - If you like steampunk, this is The Steampunk AU, much like how Irene Adler is The Woman. This is world building at its best, full of details and easter eggs, appropriate slang and perfect made up steampunk words. The research behind this fic has been extensive and it shows. Many, many characters show up, in character but with added steampunk flair There is a rebellion brewing; dangerous to partake in, with a captured leader that might or might not be rescued before it is to late. Rebellion is not the only dangerous activity in this Thedas, either - this is a fic with adventures, suspense and mysteries, a Victorian feel and steampunk everything. Machines are in common use, magic is rarer and weaker now than before, considered a taboo and something that should be forgotten, viewed by some as nothing more than a fairytale. But some mages are still powerful, and considered a danger. The leader of the Underground has a plan, but that is not the biggest threat this world is about to face. Read this. Read this. Read this.
Avete Vos (Anders/Fenris) - Fenris is Danarius’ priced gladiator, having done well enough in the arena to own slaves of his own. One day, he receives a new healer; an escaped Circle mages accidentally sold into slavery. This is a long one, not all of it up on AO3 yet, but what is not can be found on the kmeme. The setting is extremely well crafted and detailed, the characterisation great with Anders and Fenris managing to be so very them, even in such a different situation. There are plenty of original characters in here, written so well that I cannot help but feel for and care about them. Very, very worth the read.
Panacea (Anders/Hawke, past Anders/Karl) - A modern AU with Anders as a young doctor, still in mourning and lonely when he meets Garrett. There is hope, then, but as it turns out, his time of heartbreak is not yet over. This is a sad story, that grips my heart and makes it ache, but it is so worth it. Very well written, with great pacing and natural dialogue, and plenty of things that will make you feel. If you enjoy being dragged into a story and feeling for and with the characters, this is for you.
Of Wolves (Cauthrien/Teagan) - I have recommended this before, but it is simply so brilliant that I have to do it again (and possibly again, and again). Ser Cauthrien is sent to check on the Arl, and Teagan meets her on the road. And then you are sucked into a story that reads like a fairytale tinged with horror, is captivating to the point of making you forget about breathing, keeping you spellbound with its heavy atmosphere and unsettling events. It is brilliantly written. I can feel the weight of the stone in the Keep, the doubt and the fear and worry of the characters; this story grips my heart. Even if it is not a pairing you are interested in (and the focus of the story is not the pairing, not as a romance as such), even if you do not have much interest in these characters - read it. Read it for the story. This story is so very, very worth it.
Amaranthine (Anders/Hawke, Bethany/Nathaniel, F!Surana/Zevran) - What if Leandra died and both twins survived, and they and Garrett ended up in Amaranthine instead? And then everything ended up completely awesome? This is it, with Garrett working for the Warden, Anders being his Awakenings self, all with terrific characterisation, dialogue and just so much happening, so brilliantly described. And there is much, much more brilliance to come. (Also, hot sex scenes. Just saying.)
Mystery Is The Basic Appeal (Anders/Fenris, Bethany Hawke/Sebastian Vael, Carver Hawke/Nathaniel Howe, Cullen/Merrill) - This AU takes place in a version of Thedas where the Chantry and its templars posses even more power, and wields it harshly. Due to his lyrium markings, Fenris has the ability to sense who is a mage or not without them casting anything. He is sent to hunt for the wanted apostate and rebellion leader Anders. And then things turn completely awesome. Many, many characters has banded together to fight against the oppression, including Justice and Karl as one. It is exciting, with atmospheric world building and events that keeps me on the edge of my seat, lovely banter between the characters, dynamic fight scenes and evil cliffhangers that will make you ache for more, now.
I haven’t read any...those except Amaranthine (well.
