Ooh, hello there, secret elf, I am most pleased to make your acquaintance! I do have a bit of headcanon for it, in fact - it is carved from some sort of semi-precious stone, and instead of the usual black pieces it has light green ones. It is Irving’s private chess set that resides in his chambers, and it might be Tevinter in origin. It was at some point salvaged from the repository and Irving called dibs, and as no harmful enchantments could be found upon it, it was deemed safe enough for the First Enchanter to handle. Greagoir drops by to play and check and make sure that it is still safe, just in case.
(Also the rooks are totally oliphants because they are the best.)
Oh my goodness, who is this little cuddlechubster? Are you trying out adventuring, being away from your mom for a while? Well, I can babysit you, and give you all of the hugs and cuddles because you are a precious little chubster, yes you are, yes you are—
Anon, you have made me smile so much; you should have this note, too.
Exactly! There is no need to go the super evil route and off tons of people to fuel your powers, you just need to start taking part in the process of cutting up your meat!
I am not sure of how blood magic works, exactly; if it is the life force in the blood that powers the spells or just the blood itself for being blood, but the life force ought to be the same in everything that breathes and bleeds, and nothing suggests that there is something special about human, elven or dwarven blood that makes it and only it usable for blood magic spells. So unless there is something extra magical about two-legged beings’ DNA, might as well get some ritual goats and get the barbecue magic going! I have a good feeling about this specialisation. Very suitable for parties.
How I feel about this character:
I like him, and I wish we could have gotten to know him better. I especially like that he seems to want to learn when he is confronted by how different a life, say, Sigrun has lead. Also I think he has one of the best noses ever. Also that voice.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Justice, Anders (under certain circumstances; I need Awakening!Anders to be in an as good a mental state as possible for it to work for me), Velanna, Bethany, Cauthrien, sometimes Sigrun or Carver. Him and Justice!Anders is probably my favourite one, though, because then it is kind of in threesome territory, and I approve +100 and will overlook the fact that Anders is not always the most stable person at that point in his life. Anders/Justice/Nathaniel overrules all, okay!
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Justice and Sigrun.
My unpopular opinion about this character:
To me, shipping him with the Warden usually feels really awkward and no. I mean, Papa Howe was bad and all, but the Warden still killed him, and this whole “I killed your last living parent” business is incredibly unromantic. It just gets in the way of romance, somehow. But as the ultimate rivalmance, I have seen it work!
One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:
I wish that he had been in DAII, as a LI. I was seriously put off when they said he was planned to be, but seeing as they already put Anders in and he could be killed during Awakenings they decided against it. And gave us Sebastian instead. Some days I really, really would rather have had Nathaniel instead of him.
Or both and they could compare their grandfathers’ bows or something, seeing as that is apparently some kind of thing for archers.
THIS TOOK THE LONGEST BECAUSE FEELS. I could go on about him forever, I think.
How I feel about this character:
Oh my goodness, where do I start, where do I even start? I think that Justice is probably the one character in DA that I have the most feels about, and that is saying a lot since so many characters are so very feels-inducing. How do I begin? I love Justice. I feel for him and in some ways I understand him, too, because the world is so, so beautiful, and so, so confusing. There is seldom only black and white, and the greys can be as mesmerising as they are bewildering, and I just… he looks upon the world with such awe and regards it with such reverence, and he speaks of it like this beautiful shimmering magical thing that you want to hold in your cupped hands and just look at, forever, because it is something so wonderful you never want to tear your eyes from it, and in some ways you also want to be a part of this magnificent, flawed thing, but you are hesitant to because it is as confusing as it is beautiful.
So even as he is the personification of justice; that is the focus of his existence, and so he is not going to sit idly by as injustices occur, he still find such beauty in life, and I am drawn to that. He is stuck in a corpse, and as time goes on it must be rotting and falling apart (and oh my goodness, the symbolism of that, that an ideal such as justice cannot remain untainted in the living world, I could go on about that, too), but he himself is still so pure, somehow. Pure awe in the face of all the wonders of the mortal world.
I suppose a short answer would be, I love how he looks upon the world in wonder and finds beauty in the smallest of things, yet never loses sight of his goal.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Nathaniel, because that banter was like a possession proposal, I mean come on. And it would have been fantastic. I mean, yes, this whole Janders thing worked out very interestingly, but, oh, Justice!Nathaniel, why is this not more of a thing. Then I ship him with some Wardens - Thora loves Justice and would probably have offered herself up as a host if she had not suspected that the taint in a living body would corrupt him, but as it is, they could have this really close, cuddly, not overtly sexual thing going (because Thora has had her fill of dead things inside her, do not ask), and it would be adorable. I also kind of ship him with Anders, since Justice is rather fiercely protective of him, and that is kind of a thing for me.
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Him and Nathaniel really, and depending on the Warden, the Warden. Also Sigrun, her teasing him is adorable.
My unpopular opinion about this character:
Does really liking the fact that he and Anders merged count? I would not have wanted DAII without their merge - I just wish we could have gotten to know more about it. I also think that the merge is a bit more complete than many (including Anders himself, I suspect) seems to think. I think that there is more of Justice in Anders than the blue glow and booming voice when angered/threatened; I think that there are traces of Justice in all of what Anders does. I wonder, sometimes, if Justice and his reverence for the love between Kristoff and Aura is part of why Anders could and did fall so hopelessly in love with Hawke. I mean, Anders has had to carefully guard his heart for most of his life, but then he falls so completely for Hawke - I think that part of that is due to Justice. I think that he gave Anders a push in more directions than this whole selflessly healing the poor one. I firmly believe that Justice, in some ways, actually made Anders more whole.
I actually like the Vengeance thing, too - Justice as Justice was in Kristoff’s body is… not gone, but changed. That does not mean that it is not still him, though. He just… has more focus, and anger, and now it is personal. Change is not the same as being destroyed. Sometimes the lack of change will destroy you, though.
One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:
More. More everything. I want more Justice forever. Especially more about the merge, and I would have liked to talk to him more in the Fade in DAII (actually, while I am on it, more Fade okay), and also hug him. I wish to hug Justice.
They did hint for Justice in DAIII, and that is a must. Justice must be there. And there better be a hug option.
How I feel about this character:
I like him, but I do not have the same amount of FEELS for him as I do for the other companions (but since I am a very feelingsy person, I still have plenty). I think that is due to him being recruited so late in my first playthrough, and unlike Oghren, there was no expansion adventures to be had. So I did not get to know him as well right away.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
I ship him with Isabela the most! I think it must have been very awkward for Hawke and his team when they meet in DAII, though. I mean, I think those two can get pretty noisy. Also dwarven Wardens, and I would really like to see him with Leliana a bit more. I think Isabela/Zevran/Leliana is a pretty awesome threesome, really. No need to involve the Warden there.
My unpopular opinion about this character:
I am not so fond of his tattoo. It bothers me that it is… unbalanced, it makes me dizzy to look at it.
One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:
I wanted him to find more to be happy about. I know that the Blight is not the best moment in time to find happiness, but the way he talks about his life, it just… makes me so sad, and I wished that he would have more fulfilment and joy in it.
How I feel about this character:
I… I have a lot of feelings about this character. I mean, he did something very dangerous, despite being afraid, to save the Circle. He was ready to go up against Uldred alone if need be, and that was something very brave, even if he lost all hope and no longer felt brave while trapped in the Fade. I am glad that we got to meet and talk to a mage that was not drowning in self-loathing, brainwashed by the Chantry, or creepy. Someone who seemed proud of his abilities, and unashamed.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Karl, mostly, with some Anders threesome’ing thrown in for good measure. I could kind of see him with Petra though, for a quick fun tumble some time. I considered Leorah for a bit, but then came to the conclusion that he would probably somehow know about the spider incident, consider it a sign of incompetence, and be all no, so beneath me. If only he could have met Morrigan before the Broken Circle, though… OTP TIME! Wait, someone being dead has never stopped me from shipping before. Niall/Morrigan FOREVER!
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Finn! They play chaste chess together, not the usual mages rules chess, and people watch on, scandalised, but nothing untoward ever happens. Niall even walks him back to the apprentices quarters if it gets late, and they never shake hands or anything because Finn would find that icky. They just nod at each other.
I think he wants to play a game of chess or two with Greagoir.
My unpopular opinion about this character:
He could stand to brush his hair a bit. Is it unpopular to headcanon him as a bit catty and mean? I keep imagining him being catty and mean with Karl a lot during their chess games, but Karl is used to handle Anders being annoying so he hardly notices.
I think he secretly wants to sing about how much he loves chess, while dancing.
One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:
Saving him. Then a Niall/Morrigan/Warden threesome.
If someone actually asks me Sten, I am going to feel very awkward due to the whole family members named Sten thing.
…OGHREN. Well then!
How I feel about this character:
I like him despite his creepy comments, and I kind of want to hug him, provided he cleans up a bit first. I have a lot of sad feelings about Branka leaving him for the Deep Roads, and I think it affected him more than he lets on. He does not talk about his feelings much, but they are in there somewhere. Also I want to braid his beard a lot.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
I really only ship him with Felsi, since that Branka thing did not end up so well, but I also really only ship him with Felsi if he can straighten out, behave himself and be responsible and a good parent.
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Him and my favourite Warden have this kind of surrogate family thing going on. They are somehow very good friends, and she views him as her smelly, odd uncle. They even hug sometimes, and he pretends he does not like it, but deep inside he thinks it is rather sweet of her. I wonder if they braid each others’ hair/beard in secret.
My unpopular opinion about this character:
I am not sure if I have one, actually. I, uhm, am a little disturbed by how often he sounds like he is about to cough up a ball of snot, though. I think that ought to count as unpopular on account of being icky, and icky is not popular.
One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:
Personal hygiene.
Yesss! Think of all the glorious things a CombinationCatastrophe could create! :D
Aaah! Suggested OT3 name: muutant-1879-Combo!
